About Gresham Court Guesthouse and Venue

Welcome!  Here is a little bit about us, the proud owners of Gresham Court here in the town of Torquay on the beautiful English Riviera.

We are Russell and Caroline Cunningham and we have owned Gresham Court since June 2021. Prior to taking on the Gresham, for six years we owned and ran the local village shop in a pretty little village in Dorset. We loved our time there but it was always on our mind to run a guesthouse - and here we are!

Caroline grew up helping her mother to run a very busy guesthouse in London and she loved it and always wanted to return to the life. Russell has always wanted to get out of the rat race and run a hotel or guesthouse near the sea.

We have put a lot of work into the refurbishment and re-launch of Gresham Court since we moved in mid 2021.  Fully refurbished bar, lounge, reception and dining room on the Ground Floor, refurbished bedrooms and en-suite bathrooms on upper floors.  We have also landscaped and re-planted outside to create a beautiful bee-friendly front garden and many planters and window boxes.   There is now a picnic bench and seating where you can sit and watch the world go by while surrounded by flowers, shrubs and fruit trees.

We look forward to welcoming you here and we hope you will love The Gresham as much as we do!

Location and How To Get Here

We are located on the corner of Babbacombe Road and Braddons Hill Road East (TQ1).  Note that although our address is 519 Babbacombe Road, the front door is actually just in Braddons Hill Road East.   Click on the Google Map below to open it fully in a new tab.

Arriving By Car
Torquay is typically approached via the A380 from Exeter/Newton Abbot direction.  To find as from there, do the following:
  1. Stay on the A380, along the South Devon Expressway (50mph average speed section) until the left turning toward Torquay at the end.
  2. Travel along Riviera Way which becomes Newton Road until you get to Torre Station (on your right).
  3. Outside the station, bear right towards the Sea Front along Avenue Road.
  4. At the Sea Front T-junction, turn left.
  5. Keeping the sea on your right, keep driving until the Marina (taking the first exit at the round-about) where you will see shops, cafes and ultimately a Clock Tower in the middle of a second round-about adjacent to the Marina.
  6. At that round-about take the first exit up Torwood Street which rapidly becomes Babbacombe Road.
  7. You will see the Museum and Riviera Life Church on your left – Gresham Court is directly on the next left turning into Braddons Hill Road East.

Arriving By Bus
The 22 and 122 buses both stop close to Gresham Court - in both directions of travel.  Alight at  'The Museum' and you will find us a few metres up the hill on the left.

By Train
Train journeys to Torquay typically require a change at Exeter or Newton Abbot, whether traveling South from the London or Midlands direction, or North from Cornwall.  It is best to alight at the main Torquay station rather than Torre.  Taxis are readily available (see below) or, from the main station walk directly down Rathmore Road 100 metres to the corner with Torbay Road where a 22 or 122 bus may be caught (towards St Marychurch, Dawlish, etc.).  Ask for a ticket to The Museum.

Taxis
We recommend the following Taxis who we know to provide an excellent, reliable service:
  • Torbay Taxis - tel: 01803 211 611
  • Torbay Cab Company - tel: 01803 292 292
